What is involved in the first phase of the Integrative model? Briefly include a note about how this phase is difficult for learners, and how teachers might respond?

What will be an ideal response?

The first phase of the Integrative model involves (1) conducting a preliminary exploration of an organized body of knowledge, (2) developing a basic understanding of what information is contained within, (3) gaining an appreciation of how all of the ‘pieces' of the organized body of knowledge relate to one another and perhaps to other previously explored bodies of knowledge, and (4) considering connections to students' existing mental schema. Initial encounters with organized bodies of knowledge can be overwhelming for students before information can be new, voluminous, and organized by structures not yet understood by students. Teachers must scaffold instruction to support initial learning in this phase. (From Phase One – Describe, Compare, and Search for Patterns).
