Without some correction, sample variability is said to be "biased.". Define the term biased, and explain how this bias is corrected in the formula for sample variance

What will be an ideal response?

Without some correction, sample variability tends to be smaller than the population variability. Whenever a statistic consistently underestimates (or overestimates) the corresponding population parameter, the statistic is said to be biased. The bias in sample variability is corrected by dividing the sum of squared deviations (SS) by n – 1 (instead of n) in the formula for sample variance.
