Describe the increasing prevalence rates of diabetes.
What will be an ideal response?
Epidemiologists report a dramatic increase in the incidence of diabetes worldwide in recent years. In 2015, over 20 million Americans were living with diabetes, and among them were 193,000 children under the age of 18. Another 1.5 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2015. It is estimated that $1 out of every $5 spent on health care in the United States is spent on diabetes and its consequences; the total cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States in 2012 was estimated to be $245 billion. Non-Hispanic Whites are at greater risk of developing type 1 diabetes than other racial and ethnic groups. No known way to prevent type 1 diabetes exists. Maturity-onset diabetes (type 2), non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, is associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose metabolism, physical inactivity, and particular races or ethnicities. Compared with non-Hispanic White adults, the risk of Type 2 diabetes is 18% higher among Asian Americans, 66% higher among Hispanics/Latinos, and 77% higher among non-Hispanic Blacks.
