A comprehensive curriculum for early intervention, preschool, and early primary programs should include the following elements: (1) assessment to identify curriculum content, (2) curriculum content, (3) activities and intervention/teaching strategies, and (4) progress monitoring. Students should note that all areas are important (and required) for comprehensive curriclum development. However, students may note that assessment of individual children’s strengths, needs, and developmental levels in multiple areas is an important first step in developing curriculum since curriculum should be tailored to individual children’s needs. A second important consideration that students may choose includes deciding the content and scope of what will be taught. Questions that need to be considered include: What domain areas be addressed? How will they be addressed, and in what sequence? Students may also talk about the importance of progess monitoring. Progress mointoring should be an ongoing process where learning outcomes are assessed to see if curriculum is meeting the needs of children and if specific curriclum (activities or learning) should be changed.
