Organophosphates are potent insecticides and nerve agents. What about their method of action makes them drugs of choice for both of these functions?
What will be an ideal response?
Organophosphates act on acetylcholinesterase, inhibiting its activity. Since acetylcholinesterase is what inactivates the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, the result would be to prolong acetylcholine action at the neuromuscular junction. As an insecticide, this action is toxic to insects, and has widespread use in agriculture. As a nerve agent, organophosphates action of prolong acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction results in paralysis of the diaphragm and suffocation.
