Discuss methodological issues that face researchers that study coping processes in adults

What will be an ideal response?

The relationship between stress and health is indirect, and proposed to be mediated by
coping processes. To assess coping, researchers have developed checklists in which
adults endorse certain coping options or choices over others. In general, coping efforts
can be emotion or problem-focused, as well as active or avoidant in nature. The coping
checklists routinely contain items that assess these different, theoretical choices. In terms
of methodological concerns, because coping is a process, one might question if the
endorsed coping choices were actually the strategies used by the adult. Also, adults
frequently select different stressors to rate, which raises a potential confound. For this
reason, researchers sometimes ask adults to rate one particular stressor, such as a work
or relationship hassle.
