What is a court-appointed special advocate (CASA)? What key federal legislation prompted this role? What role does a CASA worker play in the court system?

What will be an ideal response?

A CASA worker is a community volunteer who speaks in court on behalf of the best interests of children who have been abused and/or neglected. The CASA worker not only represents the children but also works with their families and assists them with the court proceedings. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act of 1974 is the key federal legislation concerning the representation in judicial proceedings of the interest of children who are abused and/or neglected. A Seattle Superior Court judge, David Soukup, had the idea to start the CASA program.
