) Explain the relationship between the U.S.’s school funding structure, white flight, and school segregation.
What will be an ideal response?
1. U.S. schools are funded largely through local tax dollars – especially via real estate taxes. This means that communities with higher-valued real estate will have more tax dollars put into their education system.
2. White flight occurs when white families (who are also disproportionately more economically well-off than non-white families) seek out schools for their children that are populated with mostly white students, and in turn mostly middle-class students.
3. Segregation of schools occurs along racial and class lines as a result of white flight. Mostly white and mostly middle-class student populated schools are better performing because they have more economic resources to work with in schools. Also, parents in these communities are typically better educated and able to offset the effects of educational weaknesses that might arise in the school system for their children.
4. At the root of white flight are economic conditions of a neighborhood.
