Why does Jimmy Cross burn Martha's letters?

What will be an ideal response?

* In part, Cross burns the letters so that he can make amends for Ted Lavender's death and as a way to get his mind back onto his responsibilities and duties.
* He also burns them because he realizes that this is not a real love and that it's more of a dream. Burning the letters is a way of accepting that and moving on.
