Explain why the proportion of elderly inmates is increasing and identify the problems that this poses for this inmate population and for prison administrators
What will be an ideal response?
Answers should link the increase in elderly inmates to the tougher sentencing policies resulting from the "get tough on crime" mentality in the U.S. Problems posed by the graying of prisons should be explained. Elderly inmates have health care concerns and require preventive health care programs and differing nutritional needs. They will have to deal with vulnerability to victimization, frailty, isolation from outside family and friends, the need to adjust changing personal needs to prison life, and the lack of suitable programs. Health care costs for prisons will increase significantly due to the increased health problems found among the elderly. Prisons will require special staff and staff training to treat the special needs of this population.
