Discuss the relationship of the sexuality of Titian’s Reclining Nude (Venus of Urbino) (Figure 15.31) to the Venetian character.

What will be an ideal response?

Venetian art tended to combine an appreciation of the Classical motifs that characterize the humanist imagination with a celebration of sensuality that is perfectly suited to the private rooms of a humanist patrician. This painting alludes to the sexual obligations of women, and the figure is presented as an object of desire. Vasari claimed that the shortcoming of all Venetian artists was their sensuous painterly techniques, as opposed to the intellectual sensibilities of the Florentines.
