What are the outstanding properties of titanium and its alloys? Give one application for each property. Describe the allotropic crystal structures of pure titanium.
What will be an ideal response?
Solution:
The outstanding properties of titanium are its high melting point (refractoriness), high strength, and good corrosion resistance. The combination of high strength and low density makes the strength to weight ratio of pure titanium far superior to those of high strength aluminum or magnesium alloys (see Fig. 20.13). Upon alloying, the specific strength of titanium can be higher than most steels. Titanium and its alloys are used in aerospace and military applications.
Above 882°C, titanium is body?centered cubic and below this temperature, it converts to hcp with c/a = 1.587 (See Fig. 20.14).
