What is the setting of this play, and how does it help us to understand Mrs.Wright’s deed?
What will be an ideal response?
- The setting is the “gloomy kitchen” of the Wrights’ farmhouse, a cramped and cluttered room in a house that is even more isolated and depressing than neighboring farms. As Mrs. Hale says, “I stayed away because it weren’t cheerful—and that’s why I ought to have come. I—I’ve never liked this place. Maybe because it’s down in a hollow and you don’t see the road. I dunno what it is but it’s a lonesome place and always was. I wish I had come over to see Minnie Foster sometimes.” Mrs. Wright was essentially trapped in her life there with her increasingly abusive husband, and she saw no other way out of it than the one that she ultimately took.
