After an offender is processed by the criminal justice system, s/he becomes seen by society not as a person who did bad things but as a bad human being who is beyond redemption. Once defined as bad, an individual has fewer legitimate opportunities available to him or her. In addition, only others who have been similarly defined, or tagged, by society are available to associated with the individual.
