Briefly explain the first pillar of Islam.
What will be an ideal response?
The first pillar is built on the foundational rock of Islam. The shahada is the "confession" of Islam; here, "confession" means a formal statement of faith, not a confession of sin. It runs: "There is no god but God, and Muhammad is God's prophet." Its Arabic form is resonantly poetic: La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad rasul Allah. This confession is among the shortest of any world religion that has formal confessions. The shahada is not found in the Qur'an in this exact form, but its two parts are often repeated there separately. A monotheist in any religion can sincerely recite the first part of the confession. The second part connects monotheism to Islam. Saying "Muhammad is God's prophet" entails submission to all God's commandments as given through Muhammad.
