I most cases the reasons for reading in school should be similar to reading outside of school – enjoyment, information and enlightenment. Therefore, teachers should pick books for their content, their themes and their literary quality. Once the tests are selected and the units designed the teacher can consider what knowledge, skills and strategies students need to make sense of these texts. Put the skills and strategies first distorts the purpose for reading and likely lessens motivation.
