Describe the migration patterns of African Americans from the start of the 20th century to the present.
What will be an ideal response?
Economically tied to the landscape in the decades immediately following the Civil War, the advent of the Industrial Revolution coupled with a declining demand for agricultural labor in the Deep South resulted in an exodus of African-Americans out of the Deep South and into major northern industrial cities like New York, Chicago and Detroit. A second wave post-WWII migrated westward into cities such as Los Angeles and Oakland. Since 1970, many urban African-Americans have returned to the South, taking advantage of jobs in the Sun Belt and federal civil rights guarantees from discrimination in hiring, housing and voting.
