Mrs. Hernandez has phoned you about her daughter, Lupe, because she is concerned about Lupe’s behavior in your class. What should you keep in mind when you speak with Mrs. Hernandez about Lupe?

What will be an ideal response?

First, I would remember how much Lupe means to Mrs. Hernandez and realize that Mrs. Hernandez may be very emotional about how Lupe is behaving and how I am dealing with it. I would also realize that Mrs. Hernandez may have different beliefs than I do, and I would be prepared to hear some ideas and thoughts about how to deal with behavior that conflict with mine. My answer to this should be to remain nonjudgmental but to explain my philosophy. I would also try to reassure Mrs. Hernandez that she seems to be doing a good job as a parent, and I would explain to her that children go through phases and that teachers view guidance as an ongoing process that takes time and refinement. I would ask if she has any questions about Lupe’s progress or development, and if possible, I would give her the necessary information to help her have a more realistic perspective.
