Describe the process of pedigree selection
What will be an ideal response?
Seed from the initial crossing of the two selected plants (F1 generation) are planted, and those resulting plants that appear superior are selected. Seed from these selected plants will be collected and will be planted in rows. Each row is produced from seed of a single plant. Undesirable plants will be discarded. Additional selection of plants within rows occurs with additional planting of selected seed as many as six times to the F6 generation. At the F6 generation, families of plant rows become uniform, and seeds from a selected family of rows can be bulked and evaluated in yield trials. These yield trials will then determine whether selected lines (i.e., bulked families of rows) are superior to existing cultivars and whether they have desirable characteristics.
