Why are the results of studies conducted on childhood sexuality not as detailed, comprehensive, or reliable as the results of studies conducted on older people?
What will be an ideal response?
Much of our knowledge on early childhood sexuality is based on surveys of adults who recount their childhood sexual behavior. This data source can be problematic if respondents are unable to correctly recall their childhood experiences, thereby compromising the quality of the data. In a few studies children have been directly questioned about their sexual behavior. The studies of child and adolescent sexual behavior have mostly involved surveys, which have used either questionnaires or interviews. Virtually no researchers have made systematic, direct observations of children's sexual behavior. In the United States, such studies would arouse tremendous opposition from parents, religious leaders, and politicians who might argue that it is unnecessary or that it would harm the children who were studied, thereby reflecting the widespread belief that children are not yet sexual beings and should not be exposed to questions about sex. Some have asked parents to report on their children's sexual behavior. However, once children have learned that sexual behavior has to be kept private or hidden, parents may not be able to report their children's behavior very accurately.
