Write an essay that contrasts Egyptian and Harrapan civilizations. In what important ways did each society draw on the resources of its river valley? What surviving evidence indicates the success and complexity of these cultures?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary but correct responses should include: The four river valleys shared environmental features: a gradually warming and drying climate; relatively dry soils; and a reliance on seasonally flooding rivers and, therefore, on irrigation. Both adapted to the give and take of their major water sources and used surplus and land resources to provide when they were in need. Egypt has much more surviving evidence then the sparse remains of the Harappan civilization.
