Summarize the trends of minorities in law enforcement.

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Members of minority groups have been slowly increasing their presence in local police departments since the late 1980s. A closer look at the statistics shows that the percentage of African American police officers has remained relatively stable since 1993, while the numbers of Latino Americans and Asian Americans on police rolls nearly doubled during that same period. By most measures, members of minority groups are better represented than women in policing. Cities such as Atlanta and Washington, D.C., have local police departments that closely match their civilian populations in terms of diversity. Furthermore, in 2013, nearly one in three police recruits nationwide were members of an ethnic or racial minority. On other measures, such as promotion, minorities in law enforcement continue to seek parity.
