What are endoscopic procedures? Why is the digestive system especially good for using these procedures? Give examples
What will be an ideal response?
Endoscopic procedures use a fiberoptic light and camera to visually examine inside hollow or tubular organs using an instrument called a scope. Since the digestive system is a hollow tube that stretches from the mouth to the anus, it is possible to examine much of the insides.
Commonly performed endoscopic procedures include gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy, laparoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and colonoscopy. It is also possible to perform some surgical procedures using endoscopic instruments. An example is a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
