Vygotsky introduced the zone of proximal development and identified it as the time during which learners may not be able to do what is being asked of them independently but are able to do it with help. This affirms the importance of whole class reading and writing experiences as a means of helping students move toward independence in their literacy. You may not be in a zone of proximal development yourself when it comes to reading and writing, but you can understand how important it is to children when you think of aspects of your own life in which you are in the zone of proximal development because you are dependent on others for help. It may be understanding statistical analysis or changing a tire. It may be speaking a foreign language or performing gymnastics. All of us can relate to what children are going through at some level.
