Type 1 diabetes is a condition that is not easily ignored. In fact, a person must be vigilant when it comes to blood glucose control. What insights did you gain from Tammy about what it is like to have type 1 diabetes?

I think Tammy learned a valuable lesson about sustained habits of nutrition and health. A similar example that may appear familiar is the young individual choosing not to consume adequate dairy products and/or not spending time outside, potentially with loss of essential stores of calcium and vitamin D. If loss of calcium and inadequate vitamin D intake are sustained, then long-term consequences occur (example: osteopenia).
Throughout an individual’s lifespan it is important to adhere to health and nutrition recommendations. Genetics plays a role in our life expectancy and perhaps the arrival of genetic-linked diseases; however, positive lifestyle choices, which include providing your body with adequate calories, optimal nutrients, and maybe even phytochemicals, allow prevention of chronic diseases and increase the possibility of a healthy quality of life.
