Describe the different CVT designs that have been used over the years. Give examples of each.

What will be an ideal response?

Several designs have been used over the years. These designs are described briefly below.

1) The torodial design uses a moveable roller between two curved metal plates instead of a chain and pulley setup. This design has been seen in early Nissan vehicles and applications in the outdoor equipment market.

2) The latest Nissan CVT design uses a steel push belt between two variable-width pulleys.

3) Audi's stepless Multitronic CVT is based on two variable pulleys and a steel belt.

4) Some CVTs are based on planetary gear sets and not pulleys.

5) Honda hybrids use a conventional CVT with the addition of an electric motor sandwiched between the engine and transmissions.
