Explain the major ways that Americans’ day-to-day work lives have changed over the course of the last 100 years.
What will be an ideal response?
1. Americans work longer hours, take fewer vacations, and have fewer benefits than they did 100 years ago. Also are much more likely to have several jobs/careers over the course of one’s working life – it is rare to spend decades at one firm for the duration of your career.
2. Unemployment is widespread when we account for the diverse ways it can be measured – this is especially prevalent among young workers and more likely to be experienced by workers without a college degree.
3. Ageism is a thing older workers now have to contend with in the workforce – the result of increased life expectancy and expectations that individuals will spend longer periods of their lives in the labor force.
