Your research class is debating the difference between aims and objectives in a research proposal and why it is necessary to be clear about the assumptions, definitions and framework on which the research plan is to be based. Why are these important?
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWERS Aims and objectives focus the study; they serve different purposes and are both important in a research proposal. The aims of a research study are usually broad and are a statement of purpose (the reasons why the study is being done). Objectives should be specific and describe the activities employed to achieve the aims. Both aims and objectives should be feasible and achievable and there should be congruency between them. For example, the aim of a study may be to investigate new graduate nurses' perceptions of bullying in the workplace. The aim of the investigation might be to provide the nurses themselves, parents and hospital administration with information regarding the frequency and effect of these perceptions on the nurses. An objective could be to conduct face-to-face interviews, and/or administer a validated questionnaire, and/or a specially designed and validated tool/instrument to measure bullying behaviours. Whatever method of collecting data from the nurses is used, important information regarding the nurses' perceptions of bullying will be obtained.
