What is a token economy?
What will be an ideal response?
Counselors use token economies to shape client behavior when approval and other reinforcers do not work. When clients demonstrate a target behavior, the counselor reinforces them with “tokens” that can be exchanged for desired objects or privileges. For example, a mother established a token economy to deal with her daughter’s disruptive behavior in class. Together, she and her child had bought some items that were desired. The mother assigned points to the toys and candy based on her perception of what is rewarding to the child. The greatest reward (reinforcer) was given the highest number of points.
