Describe the strategies that can be used to maintain the gains achieved during the helping process
What will be an ideal response?
In planning maintenance strategies, social workers must anticipate obstructive forces and prepare clients for coping with them. A monitoring phase may be useful for some people. In this phase, the number and frequency of sessions decrease while support systems are called on to assist the client with new concerns. This technique, in effect, "weans" the individual from the social worker's support yet allows a transitional period in which he or she can try out new skills and supports while gradually concluding the helping relationship. The ascendance of electronic communications mechanisms (text messaging, Twitter, email, social networks) has led to an array of promising innovations for aftercare and relapse prevention. These models send reminders about medication or treatment adherence, encouragement and wellness tips, and feedback on symptoms or questions recorded by clients (Aguilera, Gerza, & Munoz, 2010; Shapiro et al., 2009). In the case of groups, it is not usually the social worker's role to discourage the group from continuing to meet, although he or she should be clear about his or her own stance and may share the wisdom of past experience.
