To provide good customer service, you should value differences and diversity. Don't be judgmental about a patient's socioeconomic status or lifestyle choices. Respect each person's privacy and the confidentiality of their personal and medical information. Protect their dignity, self-respect, and personal possessions. Be compassionate, caring, and empathetic. Anticipate patients' needs and be prepared to meet them. Use terms that patients can understand. Never ask questions or make comments in a public area that might embarrass a patient or violate privacy. Apply good customer service skills with the patient's family members and other visitors. Provide some extra compassion and attention for patients who have no family or friends with them during their hospital stay. When family members must spend the night, make sure they are as comfortable as possible. When patients and family members become irritable and frustrated, give them benefit of the doubt and remember that their lives are in limbo.
