Compare the circuits that govern rat female sexual behavior with those that govern rat male sexual behavior.
What will be an ideal response?
The ventromedial hypothalamus receives input from the vomeronasal organ in the female rat and this key structure sends outputs to the PAG. Damage to the VMH or to the PAG will disrupt lordosis. In male sexual behavior, the medial preoptic area (MPA) receives input from the vomeronasal organ through connections with the medial amygdala and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. If this area of the brain had lesions, sexual behavior would be abolished. Similar to females, the MPA sends projects to the PAG. It also sends information to the nucleus paragigantocellularis (nPGi).
