Discuss the concept of risk factors. Explain and define the various types of risk factors. Be sure to provide examples of each type. How are risk factors related to delinquency and the juvenile justice system?

What will be an ideal response?

At a minimum, answers should define risk factors as experiences, traits, or issues
that make an outcome more likely. Some risk factors are associative meaning that they
are correlated with certain outcomes. Other risk factors are causative meaning directly
related to the occurrence of the outcome. It is much more difficult to establish a
causative relationship than an associative relationship. Risk factors can be further
dichotomized into static and dynamic risk factors. Static risk factors either cannot be
changed or are difficult to change, such as demographic variables. Dynamic risk factors
can be modified, such as current substance abuse, peer choices, or academic effort.
The more risk factors experienced by a youth, or his family, the greater the chance of
delinquency and juvenile court involvement. Examples provided by students will vary.
