What physiological processes are involved in lactation?
What will be an ideal response?
The hormone prolactin stimulates milk production in the mammary glands. Estrogen and progesterone inhibit milk production during pregnancy; these two hormones decline in concentration after birth, allowing milk production to begin. Colostrum is secreted after birth during the interval before milk becomes available. Milk production continues after birth while the infant is suckling, which stimulates the production of prolactin. Oxytocin causes milk ejection.
