Discuss the origin and development of mammals during the Mesozoic. What will be an ideal response?

A group of mammal-like reptiles, called the therapsids, developed during the Permian Period.
Among these therapsids, the cynodonts are the most probable ancestors to the true mammals.
These true mammals had appeared by Late Triassic time. Most of the Mesozoic mammals were
relatively small compared to dinosaurs with only a few species having larger sizes. These early
mammals diverged into two distinct branches, the monotremes, egg-laying mammals, and
another branch that includes the marsupial mammals and the placental mammals.
