Why is it difficult for women to advance to top positions in their careers?

What will be an ideal response?

The discontinuous nature of many women's careers contributes to their difficulty in advancing to the highest rungs of the career ladder. Many women put their careers on hold, leaving the workplace several times to raise children, often hindering their career advancement. Negative stereotypes may hinder the career achievement of mothers. In one study, a mother or nonmother jobholder applying for a promotion in a traditionally male profession was rated by college students as well as adults in the workforce. Both students and workers tended to view the mother as showing lower job commitment, striving, dependability, and competence as compared with the nonmother. Regardless of work experience, women tend to earn less than men, even in the same occupations. One year out of college, for every dollar a man earns, the same age woman earns about $.82. Across all ages, women earn $.79 for every dollar men earn.
