Explain how marriage has changed over time, with attention to the role of (1) motivations to marry and (2) love in marriage. Finally, why is it important to be aware of historical changes in marriage?
What will be an ideal response?
Varies. Students should respond that historically marriage was a political and/or economic
arrangement. As society advanced and men were paid a wage, they were no longer dependent upon
family ties. Along with the ideas of Enlightenment and wage labor, came the notion of choice in
marriage. The idea of love is a relatively new concept, about 200 years old. Marriage as an institution
is and has been dynamic. Students could discuss the demographics of marriage and all the single
ladies, transnational families or postmodern families. Same-sex marriages are the newest form of
marriage.
