Describe the action of MDMA (ecstasy) at the synapse, and relate this mode of action to the behavioral effects of the drug.
What will be an ideal response?
MDMA affects at least three neurotransmitters: serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, increasing their release at the synapse. MDMA has a larger effect (greater release) on serotonin and norepinephrine than dopamine. MDMA causes depletion of serotonin, contributing to negative aftereffects that are felt for several days. Low serotonin is associated with poor memory and depressed mood, and individuals using MDMA regularly show confusion, depression, anxiety, paranoia and impairment of memory and attention.
