When considering a therapist, why is it important to ask questions about the psychological theories that the therapist utilizes?
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: Therapists approach mental health issues through different lenses that often dictate the treatment approaches. For example, Skinner and other behaviorists believed that symptomatic behaviors associated with so-called “mental disorders” are actually learned. Thus, therapy should consist of helping people learn new and healthier habits. Many psychotherapists, of course, take the opposite view, and search of an unconscious reason for the behavior. Psychotherapy will likely involve more thorough examination of deep and hidden motivations. A cognitive behaviorist believes that teaching people how to control their own thoughts and feelings is often a very effective way of helping them. Their therapy may be more practice based.
