Mapping a drive assigns a drive letter to a shared resource so the resource can be accessed using the drive letter such as G:. Drive mapping is used in Windows systems. Mounting a volume involves making a shared resource accessible as a folder in the existing file system. Volume mounting is used in UNIX/Linux systems but can also be used in Windows systems.
