The terms pertain to the jury selection process. Venire is the group of people who come to serve as prospective jurors. A challenge for the cause is a request by either the prosecution or defense to remove a potential juror from serving because of a concern about that person’s ability to be fair and impartial or to follow the judge’s instructions. A peremptory challenge is an objection to a prospective juror that may be exercised without any cause.
