Identify and discuss the five idealistic reasons for having children presented at the beginning of the chapter, and include the realities behind these idealized visions
What will be an ideal response?
The student should indicate that many couples in the U.S. desire to have children for a variety of reasons. The following are examples of idealistic images that parents have toward raising children. Many parents expect it will be fun. Parents and children do have fun with each other, but raising children is also filled with anxiety, exhaustion, crisis, and financial stress. Parents believe their self-sacrifice will result in grateful, appreciative children. Contrarily, children usually grow up thinking those parental sacrifices of time, money, and materialistic things are their entitlement. Parents believe parenting is instinctual and they will naturally know what to do. They falsely assume if you "love your children enough" they will turn out okay. Lastly, the belief that good parents raise good kids is also false. Other influences in a child's life, such as peers, drugs, etc. can affect his/her development.
