What are the fundamental characteristics through which the structure of any organization can be described?
What will be an ideal response?
Structure of the organization can be described by its degree of complexity, formalization, and
centralization.
The complexity of an organization is the extent to which it is differentiated along three dimensions:
horizontal, vertical, and spatial. Horizontal differentiation refers to the number of different types of jobs
that exist in an organization. The greater the number of different occupations in an organization, the
greater is its horizontal differentiation. Vertical differentiation refers to the number of levels in the
hierarchy of the organization. Spatial differentiation refers to the extent to which the organization’s
physical facilities and personnel are geographically dispersed. Horizontal, vertical, and spatial
differentiation increase complexity, which increases the management challenges of organizations.
Formalization is the extent to which rules and procedures govern the activities of organization members.
