• From 1–2 - duplicating gestures and intonation patterns, begin to put words together, telegraphic speech such as "Mommy down!" or "Go potty?"
• From 2–3 - more natural forms of speech emerge, adjectives and adverbs might be used, "no-no," may say "No!" with the understanding of what it means, begin to establish their own identity.
• From 3–4 - complex sentences, use of prepositions, pronouns, negatives, plurals, possessives, and interrogatives, may have vocabulary of between 1,000 and 1,500 words, use of incorrect words in speech such as "foots," "digged," begin to ask questions, "Why?"
• From 4–6 - have most of the elements of adult language, vocabulary and syntactical structures continue to increase in variety and depth, vocabulary of approximately 2,500 words at the beginning of this stage and up to 6,000 by age 6, may have trouble at ages 4–5 with articulating the /r/,/l/, and /sh/ sounds in words, majority of children are 90–100% intelligible by age 4.
