Explain the concept of social support and discuss the characteristics of effective support. Utilizing the case of Dan, cite examples of effective support in his life and how this helped or did not help him overcome his challenges.
What will be an ideal response?
Social support can be understood as the interpersonal interactions and relationships that provide us with assistance or feelings of attachment to persons we perceive as caring. Effective support, among other things, nurtures and promotes an ordered worldview, provides hope and guidance, affirms one's personal identity, and ensures adequate rest. Dan had effective support from his social worker who affirmed his personal identity from a culturally sensitive standpoint, gave him hope that things could change in the future, and contained stress through reassurance and affirmation. Unfortunately, Dan's problems did not seem to improve, as he was looking for specific advice that the social worker could not provide.
