Discuss the social construction of illness as it relates to substance abuse.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Varies. Those who have substance abuse problems are often treated differently than individuals with alcoholism. This is due to the fact that in 1956, the American Medical Association declared alcoholism as a disease. However, substance abuse is treated differently within the system. Those who are addicted to drugs such as cocaine can face legal and criminal issues within the justice system and may be less likely to be offered treatment unlike someone who is suffering from alcoholism. This is especially true if a pregnant woman abuses drugs, in 24 states plus Washington DC, she can be charged with child abuse and face criminal charges. Those who suffer from alcohol addiction are given the sick role, whereas individuals who suffer from drug addiction are not.
