What are some of the essential characteristics of cloud computing as defined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)?

What will be an ideal response?

The characteristics of cloud computing are as follows:
* On-demand self-service--The ability for consumers to quickly provision virtual machines with the hardware and software resources they need without waiting for outside assistance.
* Broad network access--Access to services over the network using a Web browser and standard interfaces from any location with a variety of devices.
* Resource pooling--The ability to group resources and make them available to users on demand in a shared, multi-tenant fashion.
* Elasticity--Allows resources to be managed by the consumer and quickly scaled out to provide more capability or quickly scaled in to release unneeded capacity.
* Pay-as-you-go--Allows consumers to pay only for the resources they use.
* Reliability and redundancy--Provides the capability for redundancy and fault tolerance through the use of virtual machines, as well as load balancing and disaster recovery.
