Structure is the organization of a group, accomplished by having and organizing a well
developed agenda that outlines your meeting goals and identifies what needs to be
discussed to achieve the goals. Interaction is the give and take discussion, with
participation from the group members and attention to relationships. Interation is
managed through metadiscussion, using effective gatekeeping skills, helping the group
to be sensitive to and aware of time, and using prescriptive strategies to manage
interaction. It is important that a group achieve a balance between the two, although
the exact percentage of each will vary with the situation. Too much structure and you
lose the main advantages of a group; two much interaction and too little structure and
you may never move forward toward the group goal.
