Explain the difference between confidentiality and privileged communication.

Confidentiality refers to the therapist’s obligation to refrain from divulging (with specific exceptions such as imminent danger to self or others) to a party information obtained from the client during therapy. Privileged communication refers to a legal requirement that the therapist must keep private any communications that occurs during therapy and exists in some states but not others. In states where privileged communication does exist, only the client has the power to waive the requirement and release privileged information.
