Explain theories that revise and extend James Marcia's theory of identify formation.

What will be an ideal response?

Revisionist theorists stress that effective identity development involves evaluating identity commitments on a continuing basis. Two concepts that have been devised to capture this ongoing identity examination are exploration in depth and identification with commitment. Exploration in depth involves gathering information and talking to others about current commitments. It includes researching a potential career in terms of opportunities for work and educational requirements, such as which college courses or majors would best position one to enter a particular career. Exploration in depth can also involve discussing the benefits and challenges with people who are already in a career of interest. Identity with commitment refers to the degree of certainty and security one experiences with regard to the current commitment.
